National Chocolate-Covered Raisin Day

National Chocolate-Covered Raisin DayRaisins aren’t really my thing. I’m kind of a fair-weather friend to little dried grapes — once in a blue moon I may eat some, but it only takes a few for me to remember why I don’t eat them more often. And, although many of the foods that wouldn’t usually tempt my pallet are given a second chance once covered in chocolate, for me, chocolate-covered raisins have always retained their lack of appeal. Still, this hasn’t prevented millions of other people, especially movie-goers, from enjoying a chocolate-covered version of the nutritious fruit snack. That’s right, raisins are a good source of calcium, they’re fat free, they have many antioxidants, and recent research has even suggested that, in spite of their high sugar content, raisins may help fight oral bacteria, gingivitis, and cavities! Cover them in dark chocolate, which also has health benefits, and you’ve got yourself a healthy little snack.

Chris likes raisins but, like me, he doesn’t eat raisins often so they aren’t part of our regular grocery list. For awhile, I bought small boxes as training and treat incentives for my chinchillas (one or two raisins here and there are supposed to be good for them, and the furry little creatures’ favorite type of treat), but we must have the world’s strangest chinchilla-monsters because they just turned their noses up at the fruit. We did buy some on National Sticky Bun Day; Chris made his half dozen with raisins, while I made mine without. But when it all comes down to it, raisins mostly make me think of the California Raisins and what a craze they were during the 1980s. I even had little posable California Raisin figurines, complete with a plastic stage that looked like a piece of bread. When you pushed a button on the bread it would sing the California Raisin theme song, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. This was back when commercials could still be entertaining!

To celebrate National Chocolate-Covered Raisin Day we stopped by our local Target and grabbed a box of Raisinets. We couldn’t believe they were only $1! This was probably our least expensive trip to Target ever. Oddly, the woman in line behind us looked as if she was also on a candy adventure — she had something like ten boxes of Sour Patch Kids in her arms.
