365 days of celebration

American Circus Day

Posted by Brittany

In spite of my reservations Chris and I celebrated American Circus Day by going to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, “the greatest show on earth,” at the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. I hadn’t been to a non-Cirque-du-Soleil circus since high school, and for Chris it had been even longer. We arrived just in time to grab a funnel cake and take our seats before the show started. In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting much after all of my years being blown away by the wonderful performances in Orlando. But while today’s circus didn’t compare when it came to the music, costumes, or stage affects, the physical acts were actually equally impressive. Chris and I both enjoyed the motorcycle act — the riders had seven cycles riding in a small globe at the same time, zig-zagging back and forth at lightening speed! The contortionists and gymnasts were also unbelievably talented. And though I felt a twinge of guilt, I thought the elephants and tigers were as amazing as their human counterparts (though I have to admit that when the crowd was at its loudest, I felt compelled to say “free the tigers!”)

All in all it was an enjoyable day, if not a little discordant. Watching the performers, and witnessing their accomplishments, is proof of the evolution of our understanding of the human body and mind, and how to manipulate them both in order to achieve the amazing. I wonder if we’ll progress throughout the future, and throw a little more heart into that equation too.
