Today is National Caramel Popcorn Day, a day to celebrate the sticky treat that offers a deliciously sweet alternative to regular salt-and-butter popcorn. Caramel corn, is created by covering popcorn with caramel or molasses, and it can be made with either white or brown sugar caramel to achieve different degrees of sweeness. The snack is a popular indulgence and is readily available from a variety sources, including gourmet retailers, grocery stores, and gift catalog companies.
Every other Saturday when I was a little girl I used to wake up and watch the morning cartoons while my dad did the bi-weekly grocery shopping for our family. If I was lucky there weren’t any reruns. And if I was even luckier, my dad would bring home some Cracker Jack. I loved the caramel covered popcorn and nuts, and treasured the little tokens that came inside — especially if they were temporary tattoos or stickers. Apparently I’m not the only one that loved my Cracker Jack — a few years ago when the New York Yankees replaced Cracker Jack with Crunch ‘n Munch the outcry was so overwhelming that they had to revert back to their original snack immediately! Although I don’t get Cracker Jack that often anymore, I still get my fair share of caramel popcorn around the holidays. Every year at our office we receive seemingly endless boxes of gifts from the companies we work with, and there is usually at least one giant tin brimming with caramel popcorn.
To celebrate National Caramel Popcorn Day Chris and I stopped at the closest Target during our lunch break and got a huge bag of Target brand caramel popcorn. Ironically, we had decided not to make this treat from scratch because, due to the large number of recent food related holidays and the affect it’s having on our waistlines, I didn’t want a lot of sweet stuff hanging around the house. But we didn’t see the Cracker Jack (the Target had just been remodeled — so confusing!) and there was only the one large-sized bag of caramel popcorn, so we grabbed it and headed back to work. I knew I should have asked Chris to take the bag back to his desk because once I sat down and started working, I couldn’t help myself. I’d intended to open the bag tonight when i got home, but I ended up eating two cups of the popcorn right after lunch!
