365 days of celebration

Morse Code Day

Posted by Brittany

To celebrate today’s “unofficial” Chris and I visited the W1AW website and tried our hand at translating one of their slowest test files, a practice message transmitted at a mere 5 WPM. We transcribed the dits and dahs from the first one and a quarter minutes, listening three or four times to make necessary changes to our markings. After that, we compared our transcription against the coded alphabet. Our results weren’t perfect matches to each other, but working together we were able to translate the message to determine that the segment we listened to was a description of the original test date, sometime last October. It’s amazing to me, especially after this exercise, that there are people that can actually transcribe Morse code in their heads. Sometimes people are amazing machines.

Tomorrow we will be making a brief trip in honor of Workers Memorial Day.
