365 days of celebration

National Trails Day

Posted by Brittany

I knew Stafford County had some gorgeous sites, but I was in awe of the green forestry, the seemingly endless abyss of lily pads on the low waters, and the beautiful stone (some of it still bearing scars of the quarry industry). Chris and Joey snapped a ton of pictures, while Emily and I spent most of our time exploring with the dogs. We stopped at each historic marker and informational sign, and spent plenty of time enjoying the scenery, so the short mile and a half trek ended up taking almost two hours. As we rounded the final bend I watched a duck playing in the shallow water, tail-end up, as he spent several minutes in search of something — probably dinner. When we were leaving I was almost sad to see the sun setting, and found myself wishing there was even more trail to explore. Government Island is a wonderful little gem and I can’t wait to take the other two dogs on our next visit.

Tomorrow Chris rides the Tour de Cure to support the fight against Diabetes. I’m sure he’ll be super hungry by the time he finishes his metric century — just in time for National Gingerbread Day!
