Best Friends Day

“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.” – Albert Schweitzer

When Chris and I were just becoming friends, I felt like an empty, leftover shell of a person. The failure of my first marriage, coupled with the cautioned excitement of starting a new life, had left me kind of a wreck. Chris comforted me through a lot of tears, and revived my spirit when I felt broken. I’ll never forget that he was there for me when I needed him most.

“You can always tell a real friend: when you’ve made a fool of yourself he doesn’t feel you’ve done a permanent job.” – Laurence J. Peter

In spite of all of those tears, or the lazy weekends when Chris sees me without my makeup, or the stupid things he’s seen me do (like electrocute myself) and say (like last night when I told him that insects aren’t animals), I never feel embarrassed around him. I know he loves me no matter what, and I know there’s still nobody else he’d rather share his secrets with.

“The real test of friendship is: can you literally do nothing with the other person? Can you enjoy those moments of life that are utterly simple?” – Eugene Kennedy

We have this one mastered. We do a lot of fun stuff, like this blog project or playing with our animal menagerie, but we also spend a lot of time doing nothing. In fact, when he comes home in a bit, I think we’re going to plop down in front of the television and watch the next episode of Dexter on DVD (ironically, earlier this week we watched the episode where Dexter kills his best friend).

“Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.” – Aristotle

I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Chris and I are definitely two parts of a whole, and I think most of the time we even bring our best half to the equation!

I have a lot of other besties out there that I’m thinking of today. I’m lucky enough to have parents that I’m really close with, great in-laws, and a couple of long-distance friends who, in spite of my negligent inconsistencies in communication, are dear to me and always in my heart. You guys know who you are! XOXO

Thinking of all of my loved ones has left me in a sweet mood. And tomorrow’s about to get even sweeter — It’s National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day!
