July 2nd is World UFO Day, a day dedicated to raising “awareness about the undoubted existence of UFO’s and…intelligent beings from outer space.”
The first World UFO Day was celebrated a decade ago, in 2001. Since then, the World UFO Day Organization (WUFODO) has also used the day as a chance to encourage governments to share their classified information about UFO sightings with civilians. UFO themed events are common on this day, with get-togethers held in many cities throughout the world. Sky-watching is a favorite activity, but according to the WUFODO, “the most important thing is that people collectively open their minds…for one day and send out the message mentally that UFO’s are welcome on this earth.”
I consider myself pretty open-minded to the idea of life on other planets. I’d like to think there are other intelligent beings out there in the universe somewhere wondering, like us, if there’s more beyond the cosmos. Even so, I’m skeptical of stories about little green men and alien abductions. I just feel that, if contact had already been made, the world would know. But I suppose anything is possible — there are unexplainable things in our skies. As Chris mentioned on Look Up at the Sky Day and Paranormal Day, he has seen an Unidentifiable Flying Object. We’ll never know if it was a craft manned with creatures from another world, but what we do know is that it will always remain a mystery.
To celebrate today’s “unofficial” Chris and I went to the movies! We’ve both been anxious to see Super 8 and with its alien storyline we thought today would be the perfect occasion. We won’t spoil the movie by telling you whether or not it featured a UFO, but let’s just say we definitely fulfilled our requirements for celebrating World UFO Day. And with a great storyline and superb acting, I would recommend this fun movie to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. While we were out today, we also paid extra attention to what was going on in the sky. At one point I thought I saw something strange in the atmosphere but Chris said it was just an airplane. I’m sure he was right — after all, it is just about time for my annual vision exam. But what if he wasn’t? Isn’t it interesting to consider the possibility?
Tomorrow we’ll be dealing with a strange being of a different kind. We’re building our first scarecrow for Build a Scarecrow Day.
