Book Lovers Day

Book Lovers DayBook Lover’s Day, celebrated annually on August 9th, encourages readers everywhere to grab a good book, find a relaxing place, and allow themselves to be transported by their imaginations. Reading is one of the world’s most best pleasure activities, offering benefits such as improved memory and analytical thinking, stress reduction and a greater sense of tranquility, an increased vocabulary, and enhanced writing skills. So whether you prefer fiction or non-fiction, paperbacks, hardbacks, or e-books, today is the day to feed your mind with an interesting book.

I struggled when I was learning to read, and felt like one of the latest developers in my early elementary school years. But by the time I finally grasped the concept of reading, I was doing it at a level years above my age. Still, for awhile it was something I only did out of “necessity”, for school projects or library contests, preferring instead that my mom read to me whenever possible (as a writer herself, my mom makes a great reader). Then, when I was in middle school, something clicked. I think it may have happened when I read Of Mice And Men during one of my summer vacations; I became wrapped up in the story, touched by it, and I could feel myself enjoying the act of reading for the first time. After that, I often found myself curled up in our living room’s oversized lounge chair with various kinds of books — literature, teen horrors, poetry anthologies, and school reading. My affection for books eventually led me to my first retail job at Books-A-Million, and later, Borders (which, sadly, is closing). Though I don’t have as much time for reading as I’d like, diving into a good book is still one of my favorite ways to grab a little “me time.”

To celebrate Book Lover’s Day I hunkered down with my current read for a little bit and finally finished off the last chapter I’ve been tip-toeing around for the past two weeks. I’m too embarrassed to admit how long I’ve been reading this medium-sized book so that detail will have to remain my own personal secret, but suffice to say that this year has been a lot busier than the last and I haven’t made a lot of time for reading. Today’s “unofficial” has reminded me how intoxicating it can be to shelf all of life’s worries for a brief period while I get carried away in another world. And it’s also made me re-think my current “reading list.” I had planned on postponing my next foray into the land of fiction for awhile so I could read What To Expect Before You’re Expecting, but now I’m wondering if I might be able to squeeze in one more quick novel before that. Fiction is by far my favorite genre and I don’t know if I’m ready to give it up just yet. Or maybe I’ll have to juggle both; I’ve never been a fan of reading two books at once, but sometimes its a necessary evil.
